Karel Absolon & the Exploring of the Moravian Karst
How generations of cavers, and one determined scientist, turned a dark limestone maze into the visitable Punkva Caves and mapped the abyss below.

The Punkva Caves did not simply open for visitors; they had to be found, connected and made passable, often through flooded passages and blocked chambers. For a long time the pieces of the system were known only separately — a cave here, a shaft there, the great abyss in the middle — without anyone certain how, or whether, they linked underground. The story of the site is therefore also a story of exploration: of people willing to wade, dig, dive and wait out floods to trace where the Punkva river actually went once it disappeared into the rock. What is now a comfortable guided walk and boat ride rests on decades of far less comfortable work by cavers who mapped the darkness first.
Karel Absolon's central role
The name most associated with that effort is Karel Absolon (1877–1960), a Moravian scientist — geographer, archaeologist and speleologist — whose work is widely credited with opening up the Punkva system and driving the exploration of the Macocha Abyss and its surrounding caves in the early twentieth century. Absolon is generally remembered as a forceful, ambitious organiser as much as a researcher, someone who pushed hard to make the caves accessible and known. It's fitting that he came from the region: his grandfather was himself a noted local naturalist, and Absolon grew up close to the landscape he would spend much of his career underground in. The turning of a hidden river system into a visitable attraction owes a great deal to his drive.
Reaching the bottom of the abyss
One of the exploration's headline goals was the Macocha Abyss itself — not just peering into it from the rim, but understanding what lay at its base and where the Punkva went from there. Reaching and studying the abyss floor, with its lake and the flooded passages leading off it, was a serious undertaking given the depth and the water involved. Early attempts to plumb such pits and connect them to the river caves were painstaking, and the fuller picture of the system emerged gradually rather than in a single breakthrough. The exploration effort is generally associated with the first decades of the twentieth century, the period when the abyss shifted from an awe-inspiring hole in the forest to a studied, mapped part of a connected underground network.
From expedition to boat tour
The practical legacy of all this exploration is the visit itself. Once the river passages were traced and the connections understood, it became possible to route visitors through the caves and, crucially, along the underground Punkva by boat — the ride dated to 1920 that remains the highlight today. In other words, the tourist experience is a direct descendant of the exploratory campaigns: the path you walk and the water you cross were charted by people who had no map to follow. That continuity is easy to overlook when a modern visit feels so orderly. It is worth remembering, at the landing stage, that someone had to find this river in the dark before anyone could ride it in comfort.
A caving tradition that continues
Exploration of the Moravian Karst never really ended. The region holds well over a thousand recorded caves, and cavers and scientists have continued to survey passages, dive flooded sections and probe the system below the parts open to sightseeing — including waters well beneath the visible lake at the abyss floor. This ongoing work is mostly invisible to visitors, but it is the reason our knowledge of the karst keeps deepening. The public caves are a small, carefully managed window onto a much larger and still not fully known underground world. When guides recount the history of the site, they are describing not a finished chapter but the visitable surface of a landscape that people are, in quieter ways, still exploring.
