How the Macocha Abyss & Punkva Caves Formed
The story behind Moravia's 138-metre sinkhole: how slightly acidic water, limestone laid down in a tropical sea, and a collapsing cave roof made it.

Long before there was an abyss to fall into, there was warm, shallow water. The limestone of the Moravian Karst was laid down as marine sediment during the Devonian period, hundreds of millions of years ago — the compressed remains of coral, shells and lime mud from a tropical sea that once covered the region. That origin matters, because limestone has one property that makes all the difference here: it dissolves. Rock that formed quietly on a seabed became, over immense spans of time, the raw material for one of Central Europe's great cave systems. Everything you see at Punkva — the chambers, the river passages, the abyss itself — is the long consequence of water working patiently on stone that was never truly permanent.
Water that eats stone
Karst landscapes form because rainwater is mildly acidic. As it falls and filters through soil, water picks up carbon dioxide and becomes a weak carbonic acid — strong enough, given enough time, to dissolve limestone along its natural cracks and joints. Underground, the Punkva river and its tributaries did exactly this, widening hairline fractures into fissures, fissures into passages, and passages into the halls you now walk through. The dripstone decoration comes from the same chemistry in reverse: water carrying dissolved lime emerges into an air-filled chamber, releases its carbon dioxide, and leaves a trace of calcite behind. Stalactites growing down from the ceiling and stalagmites building up from the floor are the slow, drop-by-drop accounting of that exchange, generally reckoned to grow only a fraction of a millimetre a year.
When the roof gives way
The Macocha Abyss is a particular kind of feature — a collapse sinkhole, not a canyon carved from above. The usual explanation runs like this: over a very long time, the Punkva river hollowed out a large chamber underground. Eventually the rock roof spanning that void could no longer support its own weight and fell in, opening the ground to the sky and leaving a steep-walled shaft where a cave once stood. That is why the abyss looks the way it does: near-vertical walls, a rubble-strewn base, and the river still running along the bottom, continuing the work that began the whole process. Geologists sometimes describe it as a 'light hole' — a window that collapse has punched down into an active cave system, rather than a valley opened up by erosion at the surface.
A landscape shaped from below
What makes karst country distinctive is that much of its drama is hidden. On the surface you notice sinkholes, disappearing streams and dry valleys; the real architecture is underground, where water routes itself through the rock in ways that don't match the hills above. The Punkva river demonstrates this vividly: it flows on the surface, vanishes into the limestone, threads through kilometres of cave including the base of the abyss, and re-emerges downstream. Rivers that behave like this — sinking and rising, spending part of their course in darkness — are a signature of mature karst. The Moravian Karst has been sculpted this way for a very long time, which is why it holds well over a thousand recorded caves in a relatively compact area of limestone.
Still a work in progress
It is tempting to think of the abyss and caves as finished, but the processes that made them have never stopped. Water still drips, formations still grow by imperceptible increments, and the Punkva still flows through the system, dissolving and depositing as it goes. Divers and cave scientists have explored flooded passages well below the visible lake at the abyss floor, a reminder that the system continues downward past the point sightseeing reaches. On a human timescale nothing appears to change; on a geological one, the caves are a living landscape mid-sentence. That is part of what makes standing at the rim so affecting — you are looking not at a monument but at an ongoing event, one that has been unfolding since long before anyone was here to name it.
